Prague is the capital city of Czechia, formerly known as the Czech Republic. Renowned for its breathtaking architecture, cobblestone streets that whisper tales of the past, and vibrant cultural scene, Prague is a city that blends history and modernity. If you’re thinking of travelling alone here, you should definitely do it. In this article, I share things to do in Prague alone, activities for Prague solo female travel and recommended accommodation for us solos. Happy planning!

Solo Travel in Prague

Prague is a great city for solo female travellers, that’s why I’ve given it 5 out of 5 stars for being solo-female friendly. It is walkable with good transport systems and most of the locals speak English. Prague is a sociable city so being solo here allows you to immerse yourself in the city. Take one of the Czech beer tours to meet others or just sit in a beer garden on a communal table and strike up a conversation.

When you’re travelling to Prague alone, in the summer months on the boardwalk near the river you’ll be able to meet people at the festivals that take place or join an evening bar crawl to experience the city safety at night. 

Is Prague safe for solo female travellers?

On your Prague solo trip, as with most cities, you may want to avoid the area around the train station at night as it can be a bit sketchy. You also need to be careful of pickpockets in the busy tourist areas such as Wenceslas Square so just make sure you know where your purse is which is also a good idea on a crowded metro or tram too. Is Prague safe to travel alone? Yes! You just need to keep your wits about you and you’ll have an amazing time. 

Travel Tips Prague

How long do you need in Prague? You can easily visit Prague for a weekend but you’ll only be scratching the surface as there is so much to do here. A week is a good amount of time to spend here and it gives you the chance to do some day trips too. 

If you plan to visit many places in Prague, it may be worth considering a Prague Cool Pass, which allows entry to more than 70 monuments and museums from 1 to 6 days (yes, there really are that many!)

Hopping on an old tram in Prague is a must and is one of the cheapest ways to get around on public transport. The trams and buses run into the night, but Prague is a great city to walk around during the day and is very safe. Or you may prefer the hop-on hop-off bus to get around  the city’s landmarks (you get a free river cruise too!)

If you’re only here for a short while, I recommend getting skip the line tickets especially if you want to see Prague Castle during the busy months. This way you’re guaranteed to see the attractions and can beat the crowds. 

Beer is a huge part of the Czech culture, so indulge in a pint in one of the many local pubs and breweries especially the Pilsner. Don’t forget to try the goulash too, it’s a typical stew with beef and onions, or if you have a sweet tooth, try their sweet pastry called Trdelnik. 

Top Things To Do in Prague Alone

With its enchanting streets and historic jewels, Prague is ideal if you love to explore on foot. The city isn’t that big making it easily walkable. The must-visit attractions in Prague span centuries, offering a deep dive into its rich history and vibrant culture. Here are the must-sees that you can’t miss on your solo trip to Prague. 

1. Prague Castle

Dominating the city skyline, Prague Castle isn’t just an iconic landmark; it’s a sprawling complex that tells the story of Prague’s royal history. The castle grounds are a treasure trove of architectural styles, from Gothic to Romanesque and Baroque. Make sure to meander through the gardens at the end of your visit, to enjoy the tranquil and stunning views over the city.

2. Charles Bridge

This historic bridge is the soul of Prague. It is stunning at any time of day but it really transforms into something magical at night. The Gothic stone towers, the silhouettes of statues against the twilight, and the soft glow of the lamps create an atmospheric setting perfect for some reflection time. If you love photography, it is the iconic photo of Prague and one that inspires artists who sell their prints on the bridge that you can take home as a keepsake (I have two at home!)

3. The Old Town Square & Astronomical Clock

The heart of Prague’s historical centre, the Old Town Square, is a bustling centre of colourful baroque buildings and Gothic churches. It is home to the Astronomical Clock. Mounted on the Old Town Hall, the clock is a marvel of medieval engineering. If you see a crowd gathering here it means the hourly show is about to start! 4. Vltava River

Taking a stroll along the Vltava River, especially along the Royal Way from the Powder Tower to Prague Castle, is a journey through the essence of Prague. The riverside offers serene views, and the path leads you through historic districts, allowing you to explore the city at your own pace. There’s a hop-on hop-off bus that includes a Vltava river cruise if you want to explore it from the waters edge. 

5. Strahov Monastery and Petřín Hill

The Strahov Monastery, perched atop Petřín Hill, is not just a site of religious significance; it’s a cultural gem that boasts stunning views of Prague. The monastery’s library is an architectural masterpiece, and the hill is an ideal green oasis, ideal for a peaceful retreat from the city’s buzz. You can take a tour on an eBike that stops here too!

Whether you’re an active solo, love museums and art or want to indulge in some culture, there are so many different activities that you can in the city. If you’re visiting Prague alone, I’ve listed them in alphabetical order so that you can find the right activities for you.

Get outdoors: Prague and its surroundings offer numerous outdoor activities for the active solo. You can rent a bike and explore the city’s extensive network of cycling paths, or take a paddle boat out on the Vltava River. Visit the winter months and the city’s parks transform into beautiful snow-covered landscapes, perfect for cross-country skiing. * Take a tour on an eBike!

Walk around Letná Park or Petřín Hill: Prague’s parks are a great escape if you’re seeking a quiet retreat from the bustling city streets. Letná Park provides panoramic views of the city and a relaxed atmosphere, while Petřín Hill offers both leisure and entertainment with its rose gardens, observatory, and mirror maze. These spots are perfect for taking a book, some lunch as a picnic or just soaking in the nature.

Arty & Museum GatG

Explore the City’s Art Galleries and Museums: Arty solos can explore Prague’s vibrant art scene by visiting galleries and museums such as the National Gallery or the Museum of Decorative Arts. For contemporary art, the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art offers cutting-edge exhibitions and installations. These spaces showcase incredible artworks all within a quiet and contemplative environment.

The National Museum is one of the most modern exhibitions of natural history on the continent and its the place you can see a whole whale skeleton! The House of the Black Madonna is such a cool name. This cubist building houses the Museum of Czech Cubism and has a cafe too.

If you’re artsy, one of the things to do alone in Prague is to check out the MeetFactory for contemporary art. This warehouse hosts live music as well as an art gallery and cafe.

Visit Lobkowicz Palace: The Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle is home to the oldest private art collection in Central Europe. You can even see original manuscripts by Mozart and Beethoven here!  * Check rates & availability: Lobkowicz Palace

Join a Photography Tour: Prague’s picturesque landscapes make it a photographer’s dream. If you get bored taking photos alone, you can always join a photography tour to enhance your skills and explore the city from new angles. These tours are often led by local photographers who share hidden spots and the stories behind them, offering a unique perspective on the city.

Attend a Cultural Event or Festival: Prague has numerous festivals and cultural events throughout the year. There’s always something happening, from the Prague Spring International Music Festival to the Bohemian Carnevale in February. Attending these events offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet others too.

Take a Cooking Class: Immerse yourself in Czech cuisine by taking a cooking class. It’s a fun way to learn about the local culture through its food and an opportunity to meet people. Classes typically end with students enjoying their prepared meals, providing a warm, communal experience. This Czech cooking class also includes a tour of the market too!

Communism History: Step into the past in Prague and feel both the excitement and fear of life during the Cold War. Jewish Quarter: If you’re in Prague for the history, the Jewish Quarter presents one of the world’s most valuable collections of Jewish historical monuments. If you’re a Beatles Fan, make sure to look out for the John Lennon wall, a Prague cultural gem that stands as a symbol of peace, resilience and love. It’s located in located in Velkopřevorské Square and there’s a souvenir shop here too.  If you love books, pop into Shakespeare and Sons which is in Lesser Town just by the bridge.

Party GatG

Party Girls about the Globe should head to the square in Old Town where you’ll meet plenty of party dwellers whilst enjoying a cocktail or two. The bars and clubs in Wenceslas Square are open until the early mornings.

Bar No.7 is a really friendly bar if you’re alone. You’re guaranteed to meet a local or someone from around the world. They hold quiz nights too.

One of the best clubs to go to is Club Roxy which is one the city’s oldest clubs. It’s a rock and pop club meaning that you can watch live concerts there. And don’t forget Karlovy Lázně, it’s the largest nightclub in Europe and it’s amazing! I went there and spent hours dancing and wandering around its five floors!

Shopping & Markets GatG

Explore Prague’s Markets: Visit Havelská Market, Prague’s oldest market, where you can browse through stalls selling everything from fresh produce to traditional Czech handicrafts. It’s a great way to experience the local way of life and find unique souvenirs either for yourself or to take back for others. Farmers markets, like the one at Náplavka Riverbank, are also a great way to spend a morning, checking out the fresh food and mingling with locals.

Wellness GatG

Visit a Spa or Wellness Center: If you love spas, Prague has several spa and wellness centres where you can pamper yourself with massages, saunas, and beauty treatments. The city has a historical connection to spa culture and if you really want to get pampered somewhere special, head to the nearby town of Karlovy Vary. This world famous spa is the place to be for relaxation and rejuvenation. There are day tours to Karlovy Vary that you can take too.

Relax in Beer and Wine Spas: This is definitely a unique one especially if you love a drink when you’re being pampered. These distinctive spas combine the therapeutic properties of Czech beer and Moravian wine with traditional spa treatments to give you a very unique wellness experience.

Relax in baths filled with the natural ingredients used in brewing beer or fermenting wine, such as hops, yeast, and grape skins, believed to have beneficial effects on the skin and overall health. What To Do in Prague At Night Alone

Prague comes to life at night. Just because you’re solo doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t venture out in the evenings. There are plenty of activities that you can join if you don’t feel comfortable exploring alone, especially ones where you can dine with others too. 

You can spend an evening within an authentic medieval atmosphere watching a medieval performance and enjoying a 5 course dinner and unlimited beer and wine. Something very different! Or watch a traditional folkloric show with dancers in traditional costumes and learn the Czech dances as you enjoy traditional Czech food. 

If you prefer to dine without the traditional entertainment, there’s a Czech tapas dining experience where you experience Czech cuisine, tapas style whilst listening to a live bad or a DJ. Or, if you don’t mind cursing alone, you can hop aboard a sightseeing dinner cruise on an open-top glass boat to see the landmarks from the water instead. All whilst enjoying a buffet-style dinner. 

A great way to see Prague at night is to explore it on a walking tour, especially if you want to see the castle without the crowds. The Old Town Mysteries & Legends Nighttime walking tour takes you through the Old Town you can see the famous landmarks illuminated at night whilst learning about the legends and the ‘Jewish Frankenstein’ and ending at the St Wenceslas Vineyard for fab views of the city.  

Best Bars for Solo Travellers

Prague has amazing nightlife and cheap alcohol meaning that you’re likely to bump into a few groups of people if you’re a party solo. Its vibrant nightlife scene with many bars offering a friendly and safe environment for having a drink alone.

Places like Hemingway Bar, are known for its cosy atmosphere and exquisite cocktails, or Letná Beer Garden, for panoramic views of the city, are perfect if you’re looking to unwind and possibly meet fellow travellers or the locals. You’ll find plenty of other spots in the city for a taste of Prague’s lively bar culture and places to strike up a friendly conversation. 

Obviously, if you do come for the beer, the Prague nightlife is some of the finest in Eastern Europe. At night, the city is full of energy, and being solo, I recommend joining one of the many bar crawls, which usually end at one of the biggest clubs in Europe – Karlovy Lazne, a former bathhouse with 5 different clubs inside. * Check rates & availability for Prague pub crawl

Exploring Prague’s Café Culture

Prague’s café culture adds to its charm, especially if you’re here during the cooler months as they offer a warm cosy embrace when you’re wandering its streets. The cafes not only serve as pit stops to recharge but also as windows into the daily lives of the locals. Here are a few spots where you can enjoy the cosy ambience, taste local cuisine, or lose yourself in a book, all while feeling safe and welcomed.

Café Louvre: This historic café, once frequented by Franz Kafka and Albert Einstein, combines elegance with a relaxed atmosphere. With its spacious, light-filled rooms and a menu including Czech and international dishes, Café Louvre is perfect for a leisurely breakfast or a peaceful afternoon with a book.

Můj šálek kávy: Located in the trendy Karlin district, this café is known for its excellent coffee and friendly vibe. It’s a favourite among locals and visitors, making it a great place to people-watch or strike up a conversation with a fellow solo traveler.

Café Savoy: Offering a taste of Prague’s grand café culture, Café Savoy boasts a beautiful neo-Renaissance ceiling and an exquisite menu. It’s an ideal spot if you’re looking to indulge in a luxurious breakfast or a sumptuous piece of cake in the afternoon. The attentive staff and welcoming environment make it a safe choice for solo diners.

EMA Espresso Bar: If you’re anything like me and appreciate a strong cup of coffee, EMA Espresso Bar offers a minimalist, airy space to catch up on work or reading. It’s known for its high-quality coffee and friendly baristas and as a meeting spot for people from all walks of life. They now have three locations in Prague.

Accommodation For Your Solo Trip to Prague

This Eastern European city has so many gorgeous places to stay, especially near the river and the Old Town. Choose from sociable party hostels to the quieter, more refined 5-star Prague hotels. There are trams here so it’s easy to reach the centre if you’re staying in Vinohrady for example but if you’re looking to venture out at night you may prefer to stay in Old Town.

Lesser Town is just beneath Prague Castle and is a quaint area with picturesque streets and cafes. Or there’s the New Town where you’ll find Wenceslas Square, the National Museum and plenty of shops, restaurants and nightlife.

I love this hostel brand and the one in Prague has everything that you need. There’s a sauna and a pool, a large chill out area to meet others, the option of breakfast and reception is open 24 hours so it doesn’t matter if you arrive late. This 4 star hotel is a great location. It’s close to restaurants and a tram station. The staff are really helpful and friendly and it has a gym and a spa! Don Giovanni Hotel Prague – $$

This 4-star hotel is one of the Great Hotels of The World. There’s a spa with a sauna and steam room, a large gym, an amazing breakfast, a lounge and a rooftop terrace and you’ll be serenaded every night with live piano music. Day Tours in Prague

There are free walking tours that you can do and you give a donation at the end depending on how much you enjoyed the tour. Taking a walking tour is a great way of meeting others and you may even go for a drink with someone afterwards.

If you feel more comfortable in a group for either part of your trip or the whole duration, G Adventures is a responsible tour company which mainly caters towards budget travellers. Most tours have an average of 12 people and there is no upper age limit. Once you book your trip you pay extra for any excursions you want to do when you’re there.

Day Trips From Prague

When you solo travel Prague, you don’t have to restrict your time to staying in just Prague either. You can solo travel Czech Republic and see the rest of what the country has to offer. Here are two must-visit destinations that are not only breathtaking but also easy and safe for solo adventurers.

Český Krumlov: This UNESCO World Heritage site is a fairy-tale town with a stunning 13th-century castle, winding streets, and charming riverside views. Solo travellers can easily join organized tours that provide transportation and guided exploration of the town, offering a hassle-free way to experience its beauty. Kutná Hora: Another UNESCO World Heritage site, Kutná Hora is home to the eerie Sedlec Ossuary, decorated with over 40,000 human skeletons, and the majestic Saint Barbara’s Church. Getting Around Prague

When you solo travel Prague, getting around Prague is easy. The trams are great and leave every 8 to 20 minutes depending on the time. There’s also a sightseeing one that you hop onto to guide yourself around the city. It’s tram line 42.

Did you know that Prague has a metro too? There are three lines: green, yellow and red and they run on the weekend evenings too. When the metro and tram stops, there are night buses until 04:30 so you’re guaranteed to get home if you go out.

For all public transport you need to buy a ticket before you board the bus, metro or tram and stamp it when you get on. If you prefer to get around by car, you’ll find the taxi app Uber in Prague as well as their local app called Liftago which you can download. Find out more about public transport in Prague here. 

From Prague Airport

From the airport, you can take a taxi for the 20 minute journey into the city. Or take the bus to Nadrazi Veleslavin then the tram. To get to Prague Airport from the centre there’s also a night bus, 910 that runs every 30 minutes. I recommend Rome2Rio to check your journey.

There’s also a service called Hoppa who offer airport transfers to and from the airport that I recommend for solo female travellers.
